San Inazio Festival
The San Inazio Festival is an annual event to honor St. Ignatius of Loyola, the patron saint of the Basques. It began more than 25 years ago and now thousands come to the Basque Block at the end of every July to see local musicians and dancers as well as Basque sporting events.
This year we officially kick off the event Friday with "Friends and Family" night, encouraging everyone to bring their favorite pintxo (appetizer) to share and visit with those that have traveled from far away or from just down the road. There will be pala games (unique Basque game but comparable to racquetball) throughout the weekend at the Fronton (619 Grove St.) that will be televised in the Basque Center for spectators that prefer to stay cool.
Saturday, beginning at 11AM, local musicians will entertain followed by Boiseko Gazteak, Boise's youngest Basque Dancers (ages 3-14). We will continue with Txantxangorriak, a basque music ensemble. The street activities will round out with a performance by Oinkari Basque Dancers, a group that has been a vital part of the Idaho Basque community since 1960 and has toured all over the world promoting Basque American culture. Pala games will continue and at 7PM head to St. John's Cathedral downtown for mass and liturgical dances performed by Onati Dantza Taldea. Round the night and early morning out with Amuma Says No, a Basque band from Boise that accompanied Oinkari Basque Dancers in the Basque Country and had a musical tour of their own.
Sunday evening Amuma Says No will again entertain for another dance, opened by Txantxangorriak in case you couldn't get enough dancing the night before.
We encourage all to come experience San Inazio, and enjoy the unique Boise Basque culture. See you on the Basque Block!
